Your state’s rules, with the sources
Every state runs driving courses its own way. Pick yours to see what it requires, who approves the course and whether it can be taken online, each fact with the official source it comes from.
Hoping for a lower insurance bill? Some insurers give a discount for finishing a defensive driving course. Ask yours first.
How it works
Three steps, start to certificate
No classroom and no schedule. This is how a course works once it is open in your state.
1Choose your state and course
Pick the course you need and the state you drive in. The rules differ from state to state, so each course is built for one state.
Four kinds of course
2Learn at your own pace

Opening state by state
DriverOnline is new, and no course is open yet. We would rather tell you that than sell you a class your state will not count.
- Every state approves driving courses separately, and each one has its own rules.
- We build one state at a time, to that state’s requirements.
- A course is listed for a state only when it can be taken there.
Tell us your state and the course you need. We will email you when it opens.

Questions
Straight answers
Can I take a DriverOnline course today?
Not yet. We are building our courses state by state, and we list a course for a state only when it can be taken there. Tell us your state and the course you need, and we will email you when it opens.
Tell me when my state opensWill my state accept an online course?
It depends on the state and on the course. Every state sets its own rules: the hours, the minimum age and whether an online course counts. Ask your state’s DMV or licensing agency, or your court, before you sign up for any course.
What is the difference between defensive driving and traffic school?
States use the two names differently, so we split them by why you are here. Defensive driving is the course you choose to take, to drive better or to ask your insurer for a discount. Traffic school is the course you take because of a ticket, a court or the DMV.
Will a course lower my car insurance?
It might. Some insurers give a discount to drivers who finish a defensive driving course and some do not. Ask your insurer whether it gives one, and which courses it accepts, before you sign up.
More about insurance discountsWhat do I need to take a course?
A phone, tablet or computer with an internet connection. Courses are self-paced and your progress saves automatically, so you can stop and pick up where you left off.
